What is Vocal Embodiment?
Just like asanas in yoga, Vocal Embodiment denotes a somatic practice. You can picture it as using the vibration of your voice to scan and feel your body from the inside. This will train your body perception as you will learn to sense where a feeling is present in your body and how it feels there (tight, wide, tingly, pulsating, etc.).
The idea behind vocal embodiment is that everything is energy. Everything is sound and everything has its own frequency. Which means that every feeling has a frequency as well.
All of these energies impact one another. For example, if you fill a sound bowl with water and tap it, it creates a pattern on the water surface. The frequency of the sound impacts the water’s matter. Our bodies also consist primarily of water.
As sound changes the matter of water, the sound of your voice will change the matter of the water in your body in the same way. The frequency of your voice’s sound is so delicate that it flows through your body, bringing about a change at a cellular level right down to the deepest layers. The sound of your voice can be felt deep inside your body as that’s where it’s born. This means working with your voice is much more powerful and intense than “just” taking part in a sound bath.
How Do I Benefit from That Change in Frequency?
Every feeling, just like every person, every plant, every sound, every word or object has its own electromagnetic vibration, which can even be measured. If you know what you want to feel like (in the future), you can connect to this feeling and its corresponding sound. The vibrations of these sounds will change your body’s frequency on a cellular level. This is why you can invite this feeling into your life and create a space for it to show its true power. That way, over time it will become easier for you to connect with the desired feeling.
Using voice practice, you will also learn to experience what a feeling “sounds like”.
At the start, this journey consisted of a lot of trial and error for me. I like to illustrate this journey by referring to a tube of toothpaste. Have you ever tried to screw on the lid and it just fit perfectly? It drives me mad when I try to screw it on and the lid doesn’t catch properly. I can feel it immediately when it catches straight away and screws in smoothly. And I don’t just mean in a haptic sense. I’m talking about the feeling of calmness, clarity and content. Working with your voice is very similar to this. You will learn to sense when a sound feels just right for you. Not because it sounds off in a musical or harmonic way but because it will not feel right.
The basic principle is:
Our nervous systems constantly communicate with our surroundings. This also includes the people around us and their respective nervous systems. If someone is polite when they are actually angry or annoyed, your nervous system perceives that their expression does not correspond with the signals their nervous system is sending out. This will in turn unsettle your nervous system as it senses the discord. It will on the other hand unsettle the other person’s nervous system, if the way you are saying something does not match with what you want to express deep down. Once you learn to express yourself authentically, people will take you more seriously. Your words will be more powerful. Even if you are speaking at a low volume or don’t say much at all.
Communicating is one thing. But your tone while communicating is everything.
